Australian Shepherds as Family Dogs

Are you considering adopting an Australian Shepherd? Read on to know why you’re making the right choice.

One of the characteristics of Australian Shepherds that make them extremely good candidates for family dogs is their devotedness to people. They generously show their affection – ranging from very low-key gestures such as leaning against your leg to very obvious movements such as sitting on your lap. On top of that, they also make for loyal and fun pets. Not only will they stick to your side at all times, they will also bring joy to your life – what with their affectionate, adaptable and intelligent persona.

Australian Shepherds are especially great around children. In fact, the more exposed they are to kids, the better their temperament will be. Just make sure to teach both your kids and your Australian Shepherd what the ground rules are towards interacting with each other. Also, never leave a toddler alone and unsupervised with your Australian Shepherd.

When trained and raised well, Australian Shepherds definitely make for excellent family pets. Here are some tips to ensure you bring out the best of the breed:

Whether you live in the city or in the suburbs, Australian Shepherds are easily adaptable. They do not a lot of room to run or play in. What they do need, though, is a lot of attention and socialization. They need to be treated like part of the family. It is also ideal to give them a role to play, such as the protector of the family, because it is in their nature to be hardworking, loyal and devoted to their ‘pack leader’ – which in this case will be you.

Additionally, while Australian Shepherds are generally friendly, the breed is very reserved and suspicious of strangers. Make sure to socialize them as early as you bring them in. Expose them to different kinds of people, sounds, situations and environments – so they don’t end up fearful and wary.
